Download Your Ancestry Family Tree in 4 Easy Steps

Ancestor trees are a great resource. But it has never been a good idea to leave your valuable ftm research in the hands of a third-party website. You never know when that website will go offline, lose access to a particular database, or be sold to another company.

It leaves you high and dry.

Therefore, if you keep all your research online at Ancestry.com, you need to download a copy of your tree to your computer for secure storage.

Fortunately, this is very easy to do!

Not sure what to do after fetching your family tree from Ancestry? We have a few suggestions! Take our list of 4 things to do after downloading Your GEDCOM.

Step 1: Select “Create and manage trees” in the TREES menu.

This option is available at the bottom of the drop-down menu. It depends on how many trees you have; you may need to scroll down a bit.

Step 2: Find the tree you want to download and click on “Manage tree.”

This can be found under the heading “Tools” on the far right. If you do not see this option, check to make sure the “My Trees” tab instead of “Trees shared with me,” as you will not be able to download a product made by another user.

Step 3: Click the “Export Tree” button.

On the “Tree Info” tab, click the green “Submit tree” button to merge your tree into a downloadable GEDCOM. Be patient, as this can take a few minutes, especially if you have a very large tree.

Step 4: Click the “Download Your GEDCOM File” button.

When your GEDCOM has finished merging, click the green “Download Your GEDCOM File” button. This will open a window that allows you to select the location of the downloaded file.

Notes

  • If your downloads go to your Downloads folder, be sure to look there for your downloaded file.
  • Texts, images, and other attachments are not included in the GEDCOM file. You will need to download those separately or download your file to the genealogy software with tree-matching skills such as Family Tree Maker (2017 and new version) and RootsMagic (version 7 and new).
  • If you have problems downloading the file, click the “Download Tips” link for help.
